The high intensity support skills descriptors set out the skills and knowledge that NDIS providers should have access to when delivering complex supports, safely, to NDIS participants.

These complex supports represent some of the highest risks for participants, workers and other, and are areas where NDIS providers must take particular care to source the relevant skills and knowledge to deliver high quality and safe supports.

Non accredited - Seizure Management including Midazolam training

Seizures can be defined as episodic neurologic dysfunction caused by abnormal neuronal activity and have behavioural, sensory, motor, and autonomic clinical manifestations. There are various types of seizures underscoring the broad range of clinical presentations.

Seizures are unpredictable and can be potentially dangerous in some situations.
Seizures mostly run their own course but there are a few things that can help, like keeping the person safe, staying with them and timing the seizure.
It is crucial that during a seizure the person is not restrained in any way and nothing is put in their mouth, this is why Seizure Management training is importance.

After a tonic clonic seizure, put the person in the recovery position if you can.

It is important for people with epilepsy to tell relevant people such as friends, relatives, colleagues, classmates, teachers or coaches, about epilepsy and advise them what to do if a seizure happens.

With Seizure Management it is not necessary to call an ambulance every time a seizure occurs in a person with known epilepsy. Most people who have epilepsy and have a seizure will recover without difficulty after a few minutes and may only need limited assistance. There are circumstances when an ambulance should be called by dialling 000 on the telephone and these are when:

  • The seizure lasts longer than 5-10 minutes
  • Another seizure quickly follows
  • The person remains unconscious after the seizures ceases
  • The person has been injured
  • You are about to administer diazepam or midazolam
  • You are unsure
  • The seizure happens in water
  • The person is pregnant or a diabetic
  • The person is not known to have epilepsy
