Aligned with NDIS High Intensity Support Skills Descriptors (HISSD) – Module 1
Our Complex Bowel Care Training, provided by Safe Act Pty Ltd, is a tailored non‑accredited course focused on NDIS High Intensity Daily Personal Activities (HIDPA). Fully aligned with NDIS Practice Standards (Module 1), this training equips support workers to deliver safe, participant‑centred, and compliant bowel care support. We emphasise dignity, infection control, and regulatory best practice—particularly for participants at risk of severe constipation or faecal incontinence
1. Prepare to Deliver Support
- Training includes interpreting the participant’s individualised complex bowel care plan, developed with the participant and overseen by a qualified health practitioner.
- Emphasis on consent and participant involvement in planning, respecting preferences, hygiene needs, equipment readiness, and infection control.
- Workers learn to manage risks and emergencies—identifying warning indicators, escalation plans, and ensuring the care environment supports safety.
2. Deliver Support
- Coverage includes administration of suppositories, digital stimulation, manual evacuation, stoma care, and other interventions as per plan.
- Importance of infection control, PPE usage, and maintaining participant dignity throughout intimate care procedures.
- Training includes use of observation tools (e.g. Bristol Stool Form Scale) and systematic recording of bowel function, hydration, and outputs.
- Reinforces participant engagement, gauging comfort levels and adapting support to the individual’s routine and preferences.
3. Review & Report
- Workers are taught to systematically document support delivery, outcomes, and any deviations from the plan, facilitating audits and plan refinement.
- Training mandates regular health practitioner review of the participant’s condition, at minimum quarterly or where condition changes prompt reassessment.
- Encourages participant feedback, open communication, and timely plan modification when effectiveness is insufficient.
Training & Competency Assurance
- Delivered by appropriately qualified health practitioners, or professionals meeting HISSD standards.
- Includes policy, procedure, and training plan documentation, supporting both worker learning and audit compliance.
- Includes practice on consent gathering, infection protocols, risk escalation, documentation, and review processes, building full HISSD alignment.
Who Should Attend
Ideal for support workers assisting participants at risk of severe constipation or fecal incontinence—for instance, individuals with spinal injury, cerebral palsy (GMFCS levels 3–5), acquired brain injuries, or neurological conditions, whose care includes non‑routine interventions.

Assessment Activities
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
Performance tasks – Administration of a microlax enema and suppository, using simulation.
Theory assessment – Written assessment consisting of a case study, multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
