Do you work with heavy machinery, open-cut mining, underground mining, a high risk work environment, or looking for a occupation in emergency response in these industries?

A higher first aid qualification may be required to ensure your staff and employees are protected against potential dangers.

Our Occupational First Aid course equips students for emergencies in a high risk work environment and provides the skills necessary to be responsible for a first aid room.

Skill Set Description

Occupational First Aid Skill Set provides a set of skills to establish, maintain and facilitate the provision of appropriate first aid in a workplace environment, including the skills to provide an emergency first aid response in the event of an emergency.

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment for:
  • HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid
  • HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation
  • HLTAID008 Manage first aid services and resources
  • HLTSS00027 Occupational First Aid Skill Set

Target audience:

This skill set has been endorsed by industry as appropriate for people who are either employed in, or intending to become employed in, nominated occupational first aider roles.

Initial Course duration:

Mixed Mode: Completion of on-line pre-course study with 20 hours practical training.

This can be run on three days or two days to suit your needs.

Three days starting at 9.00am till approx. 4.00pm.

Two days starting at 8.00am till approx. 6.30pm.

Pathways Information

These units may provide credit towards a range of qualifications at Certificate IV and Diploma levels.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

Specific licensing requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training, should be obtained from the relevant State/Territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authority.

There are no prerequisite, entry or work-placement requirements for this course.

However there is Pre-Course study to be complete prior the practical day, a link to enrol and complete pre-course is email when booking in!

It is a Training Package requirement of this course that you are physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on a CPR adult manikin placed on the floor and on a CPR baby manikin placed on a firm surface.

  • Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
  • Appropriate use of an AED
  • Assessment and interpretation of vital signs (respirations, temperature and pulse)
  • Benefits, contraindications and complications with the use of an oropharyngeal airway
  • Chain of survival
  • How to conduct a visual and verbal secondary survey assessment
  • Standard precautions Managed the unconscious breathing casualty benefits, contraindications and complications of providing oxygen to a casualty and of providing suction during the application of advanced resuscitation techniques
  • Complications with the use of a bag-valve-mask device and suitable strategies to minimise these
  • Selection and operation of oxygen masks and other appropriate delivery devices
  • Abdominal injuries
  • Allergic reaction
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Basic care of a wound
  • Bleeding control
  • Burns, including thermal, chemical, friction and electrical
  • Cardiac conditions, including chest pain
  • Choking and airway obstruction
  • Crush injuries

  • Environmental impact including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke

  • State/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures
  • Workplace requirements for first aid provision in line with the relevant state/territory Work Health and Safety requirements
  • Duty of care in relation to first aid provision
  • Safe work practices to deal with risks and potential hazards including manual handling, hazardous substances, dangerous goods and chemicals
  • Infection control principles and procedures, including use of standard precautions based on incident
  • Requirements for currency of skill and knowledge
  • Legal, workplace or community issues relating to the provision of CPR including:
  • Awareness of potential need for stress-management techniques and available support following an emergency situation
  • Consent
  • Capabilities of emergency management services
  • Privacy and confidentiality requirements
  • Importance of debriefing.
